Tiaras, Tuxedos and Toolbelts – Celebrating the Launch of a New Saskatchewan Series called Weekend Wonder
March 12, 2010

Zoot Pictures Inc. and Saskatchewan Communications Network (SCN) are pleased to announce the launch of a new television series, Weekend Wonder on March 15, 2010.

Weekend Wonder is a 3 part docu-drama series that chronicles the challenges and triumphs of building an eco-friendly cottage over three days on the banks of Buffalo Pound lake. A group of friends and neighbours come together and tackle this seemingly impossible task with true pioneer spirit and determination reminiscent of the barn-raising days of our past.

In July 2009, John Robinson of Robinson Residential Designs gathered together his team of dedicated volunteers to design and build a cottage over the long weekend. But, this is no ordinary cottage. Innovative designs, technology and materials make it a model eco-friendly home. If the cottage’s innovative design didn’t make things challenging enough to build, uncooperative weather and looming deadlines leave no room for error.

Director Leif Kaldor was there for the entire shoot. “It was crazy,” he said. “They started at 5:30 am every day, and went until the weather, bugs or fatigue shut them down. The most interesting part about following the build was that none of them had any idea if it could be done.”

The launch for the series will be an event as unique as the show it is celebrating. Billed as Tiaras, Tuxedos and Toolbelts, the launch event will take place at the Albert St. South Appleby’s restaurant in Regina on March 15th from 8:00 pm to 11:00 pm. Guests will be dressed in formal gala attire complete with hard hats and toolbelts and will watch the first episode of the series at 9:30 pm on SCN. With well over 100 volunteers and contractors involved in the build, it will be a full house. Media are welcome to attend.

The “Tiaras, Tuxedo’s and Toolbelts” Launch Gala for Weekend Wonder is supported by SCN, SaskFILM, Robinson Design and Zoot Pictures Inc.

Weekend Wonder was made possible with the support of the Saskatchewan Film Employment Tax Credit, Canada Film and Video Tax Credit, Canadian Television Fund and was produced in association with SCN.

“It was a remarkable experience working with the RCMP and making this documentary series,” series Producer Jessica Webb said.  “We were able to film things never before seen by the public and, as a result of doing so, hope that viewers will gain a greater appreciation for what these talented men and women do on our behalf.”

"More than 13 hundred RCMP officers perform federal, provincial and municipal policing duties in Saskatchewan," said D.F. (Yogi) Huyghebaert, Saskatchewan Minister of Corrections, Public Safety and Policing.  "Saskatchewan residents appreciate the vital role the RCMP plays in keeping our communities safe, dating back to the earliest days of our province."
