COMMUNITYNET

CommunityNet is an initiative of the Province of Saskatchewan, which brings high-speed networking to communities across the province. The network is shared between government, health and education sectors, and links 834 educational facilities, 310 health facilities, 86 First Nations schools and 256 government offices in Saskatchewan.

CommunityNet is delivered to Saskatchewan communities through existing and new fibre optics, and digital services lines via copper wire and satellite.

The two-way satellite system used in CommunityNet is SCN's Digital Satellite Network, or DSN2, and provides service to approximately 160 rural and northern education users. Recently integrated to its digital, MPEG based satellite transmission system DSN2 provides a made in Saskatchewan solution for cost effective delivery of networking and Internet services. The original DSN used a combination of satellite and telephone communications to provide CommunityNet Internet access to sites designated by the CommunityNet Management Committee. DSN2 moves these sites to always on, full CommunityNet connectivity, on par with sites within reach of terrestrial based networks.
